A 100% recyclable plastic milk bottle developed especially for schoolchildren has won a major industry award.
Beating off stiff industry competition, manufacturer Nampak Plastics was crowned the winner of the ‘Best Business Initiative’ category at the ninth annual Plastics Industry Awards, which took place at the London Hilton on Park Lane on Friday 2nd October 2009.
The Plastics Industry Awards are the industry’s most prestigious awards, recognising and celebrating achievement throughout the UK plastics industry. Nampak’s entry in the ‘Best Business Initiative’ category highlighted the company’s development and successful promotion of a bespoke child-friendly HDPE bottle for school milk deliveries in South Wales. This was in response to direct requests from schools for an environmentally-friendly alternative to cartons that were being used. The HDPE bottle matched the school’s requirements perfectly as it is 100% recyclable, was lightweight for children to hold when filled with milk and it fitted safely into children’s hands to avoid spillages.
Jamie Tinsley, Sales Director for Nampak Plastics, who collected the award, says: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this award. It’s the result of an amazing team effort by everyone involved at Nampak and at our Welsh customers. The bespoke 100% recyclable HDPE bottle was a great success with schoolchildren in South Wales and has helped to increase awareness of the recyclability and sustainability of plastic milk bottles. We hope to be able to build on the success of this initiative with other customers in the future.”
Steve Crowhurst, Organiser of the Plastics Industry Awards says: “This has been a tough year for the UK plastics industry, which made it all the more pleasing that this year’s winners and finalists displayed such strong performances. It’s great to be able to celebrate the success of plastics manufacture in the UK and to showcase the achievements of leading plastics design and manufacture in the UK.”
